Keeping containers well watered during the summer can be very time consuming, and a hot spell can dry them out with alarming speed. The Garden News panel tested new products designed to reduce watering need - and was very impressed. One tester returned from an unexpectedly extended holiday to find his plants were still in fine form.
Instructions were regarded as easy to follow. Testers liked the device and thought it kept plants watered well.
Alan Jones "Very simple to use; place on the side of new pot when re-potting, then put plant in and fill around with soil. Filled with water and left until indicator went down, then refilled. It held more water than a pot tray and did not leave the roots constantly in water. It increased the period between watering by at least double the number of days. The test period was winter in a conservatory and it did not need refilling for 3 weeks."
Julie Lawrence " The soil in the pot remained moist and did not dry out. The water indicator dropped when it was time to fill the container up. It did keep the plant watered. If you have a very special plant that is worth ensuring appropriate watering then this is a useful aid. It is a little unsightly ." (But can be completely buried under the soil)
Trevor Hard "it was a little awkward to set up and get the level to the top just right. This is a good product especially if you are on holiday as it self waters the plant. It worked well over our holiday."
